With a crunchy chocolate cookie, a sweet cream filling, with an all natural pop of color, and homemade candy eyes!

These are sure to be a showstopper at your Halloween parties, or just a fun one to make with the kiddos this holiday season!

Why You’ll Love These Homemade Dye-Free Halloween Oreos

  • They’re so eye appealing for the Halloween party spread
  • They’re gluten free, dairy free, and artificial dye-free
  • The cookies are perfectly crunchy
  • The kids will love helping you make these!

If you didn’t know, store bough candy eyes are filled with artificial dyes! Luckily, it’s super easy to make your own.

Just melt white chocolate, syringe a little dollop onto wax paper, place a mini chocolate chip in the center and freeze for just a couple minutes until firm!

I like to make a big batch in October, and keep them in the freezer for the fun Halloween and Christmas treats ahead!

Watch the video below for an easy how-to on the homemade candy eyes!

Ingredients

  • Almond Flour
  • Tapioca Flour
  • Black Cocoa Powder
  • Pure Maple Syrup
  • Coconut Oil
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Organic Dairy Free Icing – I used Miss Jones organic icing
  • Natural Colorant – I used Color Kitchen Foods artificial dye-free colorant. You can snag them on amazon or at your local Michaels during the 2025 holiday season!!

How to Make Homemade Dye-Free Halloween Oreos

  • Add all of your cookie ingredients to a large bowl and use a hand or stand mixer to combine the dough. Alternatively, add everything to a food processor to incorporate
  • Place dough onto parchment paper, place another piece of parchment on top, and roll dough out to 1/4 inch thickness
  • Use a small cookie cutter to get even cookies, and move shaped cookies onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. The cookies won’t spread, so no need to leave much spacing
  • Roll the excess dough back up and out again, and repeat until you’ve made cookies out of all the dough. I got 40 single cookies total
  • Bake at 350 for 10 min
  • Allow to cool completely
  • Gather 3 bowls
  • Add half of each color satchet along with 1/2 tsp water to each bowl, until colorant has dissolved
  • Add roughly 1/3 cup pre-made vanilla frosting to each of the three colored bowls and whisk / use a hand mixer until icing is smooth, fluffy, and color is vibrant and fully incorporated
  • Place each colored icing into a piping bag, and pipe onto the center of half the cookies
  • Place remaining cookies on top and press down slightly
  • You can now add your candy eyes if using (see homemade candy eye instructions in the post above)
  • Enjoy as is, or refrigerate for firm cream filling

I love how easy it to just add process all the cookie ingredients together. No chilling, just mix, shape, and bake!

Variations for Dietary Preferences

  • Almond flour – unfortunately, almond flour absorbs moisture much differently than other flours, and I don’t think there is another 1:1 sub
    • Oat flour would be the closest sub, but you’d probably need about 1/4 cup less since it’s drier
  • Tapioca flour – you can sub arrowroot starch
  • Pure maple syrup – you can sub medjool date syrup, or sugar free syrup if desired
  • Coconut oil – you can sub butter / vegan butter / ghee
  • Frosting – feel free to use any frosting that you’d like
