Chocolate Peppermint Protein Mousse
This Chocolate Peppermint Protein Mousse is incredibly thick and creamy, topped with a rich chocolate ganache coating, and crushed peppermint candies
This mousse is high protein, gluten free, and refined sugar free!

What I love about this flavor is that the level of peppermint is totally customizable!
You can use chocolate graham crackers for the base (I used Simple Mills brand), and they also come in a chocolate mint flavor!
For the mousse itself I used Chocolate protein powder. You can add 1/2 tsp peppermint extract, or use chocolate peppermint protein powder, or save the peppermint for just the candy topping! Below are my favorite protein powder brands!
- You ou can use Ora Organic Plant Based Protein Powder in Chocolate – use code COLLEEN to save 30%
- For Chocolate OR Chocolate Peppermint Protein Powder check out Just Ingredients 100% grass fed whey (also offers bone broth protein powder in this flavor). Use code colleenF10 to save site wide!
Then I topped with YumEarth brand dye-free candy canes!
Why You’ll Love This Chocolate Peppermint Protein Mousse
- It’s incredibly thick and creamy
- It’s packed with protein
- It’s gluten free and sweetened without refined sugars
- It’s super easy to make
- It can prepped ahead of time for a grab and go breakfast

Key Ingredients
- Cottage Cheese – it does not matter if you like cottage cheese or not! Once blended until smooth the chunky texture is gone. When blended with a fat source, like the nut butter, and the added thickness from the protein powder, this mousse gets incredibly thick and creamy, and thickens even more overnight! Use full fat for the creamiest ice cream texture
- Cacao Cashew Butter – adds to the creaminess while adding a rich fudgey taste. You can use hazelnut butter or almond butter. If you want to omit the nut butter all together you can- it may just be a tad less thick in texture
- Chocolate OR Chocolate Peppermint Protein Powder – the flavor is unbelievable! It tastes so smooth and creamy, and adds a boost of protein as well as delicious flavor. My code colleenF10 saves you sitewide off my favorite clean ingredient protein powder from Just Ingredients
- Pure maple syrup – adds sweet without adding refined table sugar. Pure maple syrup (not pancake syrup) is lower glycemic index than white sugar, so it’s easier on your blood sugar

Full Ingredients
- 20 oz Cottage Cheese – full fat works best for thick, creamy texture
- 1/3 cup Chocolate Protein Powder or Chocolate Peppermint Protein Powder – use code colleenF10 to save
- 1 Tbsp Cocoa Powder
- 3 Tbsp Medjool Date Syrup Or pure maple syrup
- 1 tsp Pure Vanilla Extract
- Topping
- 3 tbsp dark chocolate
- 2 tbsp coconut cream
- 2 tbsp crushed dye-free candy canes

Process
- Blend cottage cheese ingredients together until smooth, scraping the sides as needed
- Optionally, fill the bottoms of your storage jars (6oz I find work best) with crushed gluten free chocolate graham crackers (I like Simple Mills Brownie thins. They also come in mint chocolate!)
- Pour cottage cheese mousse overtop
- Refrigerate at least a few hours, or overnight for optimal thick texture
- Melt chocolate in 30 second intervals until almost melted, then combine with coconut cream, then pour overtop mousse, and sprinkle with crushed candy canes
- Enjoy!
- Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 3-4 days

I love how easy it to just add all of the filling ingredients to a blender, mix, and pour!
Variations for Dietary Preferences
- Cottage Cheese – while this is the base of the recipe, you can make a thick and creamy vegan mousse by using coconut cream and a plant based protein powder
- Chocolate protein powder – you can omit this and simply add 2 tbsp of cocoa powder for the chocolate taste
- Cacao Cashew butter – you can sub for hazelnut butter for another rich fudgey option, or almond butter
- Pure Maple Syrup – can easily be subbed for medjool date syrup or sugar free syrup
- Coconut cream for the ganache – can use just melted chocolate, just know it will harden once cold and won’t be as smooth to spoon into
